Compostable Shrink Wraps
Compostable shrink wraps are a type of packaging material designed to provide the benefits of traditional shrink wrap while also being environmentally friendly and sustainable. Shrink wrap is a plastic film that is applied tightly around products and then heated to shrink and conform to their shape, providing protection, tamper resistance, and visibility to the enclosed items. However, traditional shrink wraps are typically made from petroleum-based plastics that contribute to plastic pollution and take a long time to degrade.
Compostable shrink wraps, on the other hand, are made from biodegradable materials that can break down naturally in composting environments, turning into nutrient-rich soil or biomass. These materials often include polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as cornstarch or sugarcane, as well as other plant-based polymers.
